Sigismund Toduță’s interest in the concertante genre led to works for solo instruments such as piano, flute, and oboe, as well as string orchestra concertos composed in a neobaroque style. Among these is the Concerto for flute and string orchestra, completed in 1983 and premiered in 1984 at the “Timișoara Muzicală” Festival by flutist Ioana Mogoș and the “Banatul” State Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Remus Georgescu. The piece was later performed in several Romanian cities, and this edition marks its first publication.

The concerto consists of three untitled movements, except for the second, marked “Improvvisando, molto rubato” in red pencil on the manuscript. As a work from Toduță’s mature creative phase, it showcases a rich stylistic synthesis: the use of core motifs, emphasis on monody, chromatic modality, heterophony, abundant melismas and ornamentation, and the contrast between nostalgic rubato passages and the energy of folk dance rhythms. Timbre is also fundamental, with Toduță employing various types of flutes – in C, in G, and piccolo – to enrich the sonic palette.
