Composed by Sigismund Toduță between December 1987 and January 1988 in Cluj-Napoca, the Sonata No. 2 for flute and piano premiered on May 7, 1988, performed by flutist Gavril Costea and pianist Ninuca Oșanu-Pop. Structured in three movements – Egloga, Toccata (quasi una fuga), and Threnia – the piece evokes an archaic, introspective, and meditative character, drawing inspiration from Virgil’s pastoral imagery and the solemnity of mourning. The musical discourse unfolds freely through continuous variations of core melodic motifs, employing a highly chromatic language, in contrast to the diatonic mode of the composer’s first sonata.

The first movement opens with a deep-register flute monologue, vocal and improvisatory in nature, answered by the piano echoing the same motifs. In contrast, the Toccata is energetic, shaped as a perpetuum mobile with a gradual buildup of dynamics and complexity. The final movement, Threnia, is restrained and somber, evoking a funeral atmosphere through austere chords and a fragmented melodic line, suggesting a meditation on loss and sorrow.
