Sonata No. 1 for flute and piano, composed by Sigismund Toduță during the summer of 1952 in Cluj-Napoca, was published in 1956 and premiered in 1954 in Bucharest and later in Cluj. Though initially unnumbered, it was renamed after the composition of the second sonata. The work earned Toduță the State Second Prize in 1953 and, alongside Ludovic Feldman’s Sonata, is considered a pioneering piece in the Romanian flute repertoire. Prior to this, few Romanian compositions were dedicated to the flute, notably works by Enescu, Golestan, Brediceanu, and Elinescu.

The sonata follows a traditional fast–slow–fast structure (Allegro, Tenero, Allegro con brio) and reflects a neoclassical aesthetic, blending baroque language with classical forms on a modal-diatonic foundation. Composer Hans Peter Türk highlights Toduță’s use of motivic development, rooted in his study of baroque music. The flute introduces the main motifs from the outset, with the first movement evoking a folkloric, archaic atmosphere. The second movement explores lyrical pastoral themes, while the exuberant finale showcases toccata-like virtuosity, punctuated by expressive and cantabile moments in a quasi-improvisational musical flow.
