Explore the score history

Dinu Lipatti honed his writing for wind instruments through a series of compositions shaped by his mentors Mihail Jora and Nadia Boulanger, as well as fellow students like Igor Markevitch and Jean Françaix. The distinctive sonic atmosphere of these influences, along with Enescu’s legacy, helped define Lipatti’s style. Despite a limited output, he devoted a significant portion of his work to wind instruments, creating original pieces and arrangements that blend Romanian folk elements with the modern idioms of Bartók and Stravinsky.

The “Aubade” for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, composed in 1949, stands as one of Lipatti’s most representative works, showcasing his artistic maturity and synthesis of European and Romanian traditions. Written from his sickbed, the piece is infused with humor and elegance, subtly referencing the name of its dedicatee, Paul Sacher. Its four movements evoke folk dances, sonic landscapes, and a triumphant light, ending with an open-ended chord that invites interpretation. The premiere took place posthumously in London in 1951 and was praised for its chromatic and rhythmic complexity.
