Sigismund Toduță’s Sonata for oboe, composed between November 1955 and April 1956, was first published in 1960 by Hofmeister Musikverlag in Leipzig. Although the complete manuscript remains lost, the Hofmeister edition—likely revised with the composer’s input—served as the basis for its reissue. The world premiere took place in Bucharest in 1957, followed by a performance in Cluj in 1960. Chronologically, the sonata falls between Toduță’s Second and Third Symphonies, marking a transition from diatonic modal language to increasingly chromatic expression. Its three movements—Lusingando, Molto semplice, and Giocoso—follow the traditional fast–slow–fast structure.

The first movement, in sonata form, features two lyrical themes with reflective, improvisatory moments, creating an intimate and dreamlike atmosphere. The second movement is based entirely on a carol collected by Béla Bartók in 1912, transformed through ornamental and rhythmic variations. The final movement, vibrant and technically demanding, is enriched with chromaticism, syncopation, and polymeter. Despite its energy, it maintains contrasts in tempo and character, culminating in a rapid, almost mechanical reprise of the initial theme.
